Since July 2023, Florida has been what some people refer to as a “constitutional carry” state.
According to sheriff’s department of a major city in this state, Florida law now allows eligible people to carry concealed firearms without a permit.
The law did not change who is or is not eligible to carry a firearm.
Those with convictions that disqualify them from having a gun still may not have a gun legally and may face felony charges if they do get caught with a firearm.
The big change is that people do not have to get a written permit from the state before they can carry a weapon legally provided they are eligible to carry.
There are also several places and events where people still may not bring their firearms even if they otherwise have permission to carry them. Some of these places include airports, bars and schools. Firearms are not allowed at many major sporting events.
If a person brings their gun to a place that the law prohibits, then the person may face a fine and even a jail sentence, as well as misdemeanor conviction.
Palm Beach County residents can still face serious firearms-related charges
West Palm Beach residents should keep in mind that federal firearms laws and other state firearms laws still apply.
For example, if a person who has a prior felony on their record gets caught with a firearm, then they may face a prison sentence of up to 15 years as well as fines and other penalties.
There are other serious weapons-related charges people can still face even with a more relaxed concealed carry law.
Those who are accused of firearm-related offense should make sure they understand their legal rights and their options.
